artist statement

My work relates to the evolving nature of home and the significance of what this carries for an individual and their identity in a rapidly changing world.  I am interested in the relationship between personal and collective experiences, stories, and contexts, challenging the viewer to further explore the simultaneously positive and negative feelings surrounding home.

For me the creative process, including the exploration of different materials, is as important as is the final artwork. Concepts as perception of home and persistence of memory are a common tread though the variety of materials and formal solutions I create. I do drawings, paintings, sculptures, and installations using materials, such as, Plexiglas, mylar sheets, screen prints, fabric, paper, enamel, micron markers, sharpie markers that allow me to create multidimensional artworks.

The experience is often dynamic, pointing to the relationship between the materiality of the media, and the immateriality of light and shadow -- not unlike what it feels like to question the meaning of ‘home’ and ‘culture,’ in an unfolding search for similarity, or what is absent, in new and unfamiliar environments.
